A sinus lift is a relatively common part of the dental implant process, and we’re here to walk you through it.

Understanding Sinus Lift Surgery
A sinus lift is a type of bone graft that involves lifting the sinus membrane to make room for additional jawbone material in the upper jaw. The maxillary sinuses sit close to our molars and premolars, and sometimes, there isn’t enough space to place a dental implant. In these cases, a sinus lift may be necessary to create enough bone height and width for successful implant placement.
When Do You Need A Sinus Lift?
When it comes to dental implants, there are a few different reasons a patient may need a sinus lift prior to their implant placement. Teeth play a vital role in maintaining the health of your jawbone, so when you’re missing teeth, you’re at risk of experiencing bone loss. If that bone loss occurs in the upper jaw, we may need to use a sinus lift to create enough room for a bone graft and eventual dental implant.

The Sinus Lift Procedure
To prepare for your sinus lift, we start by taking CBCT imagery. This technology gives us a 3D look at your mouth, including teeth, jawbone, sinuses, and any other structures we need to consider. We also work with you to determine the best material for the bone graft that is part of the sinus lift procedure. The graft can come from your body, be donated tissue, or even be made of a synthetic material.
When we begin the procedure itself, we will numb the area and do all we can to keep you comfortable the whole time. Typically, the dentist makes an incision in the gums to expose the jawbone, then cuts a small window into the bone to gain access to the maxillary sinus cavity. We lift the cavity and fill the area with bone grafting material, then finish by stitching up the incision.
Before your procedure, we will go over what you can expect during recovery. Keep in mind that it will take some time for the bone graft to heal and fuse with your natural bone. This process can take several months, during which we may schedule follow-up appointments to check on your progress.
The Role Of Sinus Lifts In Preparing For Dental Implants
A sinus lift is a relatively common procedure for our dental implant patients, especially those needing molar or premolar dental implants. The procedure allows us to create more space and build up your jawbone, and a healthy jawbone is essential for dental implant success.
